Situated between Capes Naturaliste and Leeuwin, some 300km south of Perth, Margaret River is the acknowledged heart of Western Australia's wine-growing region; as well as being central to world-class surf breaks, fabulous beaches and fascinating caves.

Margaret River's wines are world renowned, with such labels as Leeuwin Estate, Cape Mentelle, Cullens and Vasse Felix leading a growing field of quality wine-makers. Where the initial prominence was given to the region's chardonnays, its production now includes all major red/white varieties and blends. An annual Wine Festival is held during November, with numerous wineries hosting special activities…hic

The region hosts a number of special events including the Leeuwin Concert around February; the 5-star Coca Cola Masters at Surfer's Point around March; and a number of lesser known concerts throughout the year.

The towering karri and jarrah forests of the south-west has generated a fine-furniture industry; and this is now supported by a variety of arts and crafts - including pottery, glass-making and painting. There are at least 4 major galleries in the region.

The dairy industry which was once (with timber), the major employer in the region, has spawned award-winning cheeses (including aged cheddar, brie/camembert and herbal fetta) and mouth-watering chocolates.

A myriad excellent cafes and restaurants offer an eclectic array of cuisine, using locally produced seafood, marron, venison, lamb, beef, vegetables and breads; and accompanied (of course) by locally produced wines.

Margaret River has it all in abundance; and with Augusta, Yallingup and Pemberton all within easy driving distance.

You would need to spend at least a week in Margaret River in order to do it full justice, however 2-3 nights will enable you to experience a memorable variety of activities.
